When the first wave of the novel Coronavirus started back in March, thousands of Canadian Citizenship tests were cancelled. Now, after more than 8 months, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has decided to resume citizenship tests online.
The IRCC has launched their latest virtual platform where online citizenship test can be conducted. The first batch of test takers, about 5000, are priority cases including those whose tests were cancelled or put on hold in the beginning of the global pandemic. The tests will be conducted once the online platform is tested for performance monitoring, safety, security and reliability.
The online system will be using strict measurements to ensure the integrity of the citizenship test. The system is built to take photos of participants before and during the examination to confirm identity. The format of the test will continue to be the same; 20 questions in 30 minutes.
Please note that you do not have to contact the IRCC to book your citizenship test. The IRCC will decide who will take the test and as usual will send invitations to those individuals.
People can also wait to take the test in-person, however no date has been set for resuming the in-person process yet. The introduction of virtual citizenship test has been largely due to the fact that thousands of people have been waiting to complete the last step of their immigration to Canada (becoming citizens) and also to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
As of September 2020, about 85,000 people are waiting to take their citizenship tests in Canada.
