Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship 2020 delayed invitations

On October 13th, 2020, the Canadian immigration department once again opened the expression of interest (interest to sponsor form) window for the parents and grandparents’ sponsorship. The good news this time was that the electronic intake was opened for more than a day (opened on October 13th, 2020 to November 3rd, 2020). During this time frame, Canadian citizens and permanent residents could fill out a form to notify IRCC of their intention to sponsor their parents or grandparents.

Thereafter the government would select applicants in a randomized manner and send invitations to sponsors to submit their completed PGP applications within 60 days.

Thousands of Canadians and permanent residents have submitted their interest forms for the 2020 intake of PGP, however, the Canadian government will only select 10,000 applications in a randomized manner. The selection was due for December 2020 however the invitations will now be sent in early 2021. The government cited reasons such as the global pandemic and the late start of the PGP interest submissions itself for the delay of the invitations. It is announced that the 2021 PGP intake will increase from 10,000 to 30,000 invitations.

Government quote:

“Our government strongly believes in the importance of keeping families together—particularly during difficult times. The Parents and Grandparents Program is a dedicated pathway to reuniting more families in Canada. Our government has strengthened the program by increasing the number of people who can apply, making the intake process more fair, and steadily increasing the number of families who will be able to reunite. Now, more than ever, family reunification is an important component of Canada’s immigration system. It plays a key role in attracting, retaining and integrating the best and the brightest from around the world.”

– The Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, P.C., M.P., Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship
